Saint-Raphael

France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometers, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.

Saint-Raphael is a commune of the Var department and the Province-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region of France. Along with the city of Frejus, it forms the metropolitan Comminute d'agglomeration de Frejus Saint-Raphael, 60 kilometers southwest of the city of Nice. It is considered part of the French Riviera. During World War II, on August 15, 1944, it was one of the sites of a beach landing in Operation Dragoon, the Allied invasion of southern France. In the 1999 census, Saint-Raphael had a population of 30,671.

Var is a departement of southeastern France. Var was formed in 1790 of a part of Lower Province, but in 1860 it was reduced by the transfer of the district of Grasse to the newly formed department of the Alpes-Maritimes, which is why the Var River does not now flow in the department to which it gives its name. The Var is also famous for its wine production, the town of Bandol in particular for its red wine.

The bacterium Streptomyces mediterranei was first isolated in 1957 from a soil sample collected near St Raphael. The bacteria became the source of the anti-tuberculosis drug rifamycin. A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, luxurious hotels and cottages, Saint-Raphael is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
