Saint-Nazaire is a town and commune in the Loire-Atlantique department of France, of which it is a sous-prefecture. It is a major harbor, on the right bank of the Loire River estuary, near the Atlantic Ocean. The town is at the south of the second major swamp in France la Briere. As such, it has a long tradition of fishing and shipbuilding. The population of the city as of 1999 was 65,874 inhabitants and the density as of 1999 was 1,408 per square kilometer.
