Sainte-Marie is a community in the French overseas department of Reunion. It is situated on the north side of the island of Reunion, just east of, and adjacent to, the governmental center that is the prefecture of Saint-Denis. As per the 1999 census, Sainte-Marie had a population of 26,582. Reunion is an island and overseas department of France, located in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, about 200 kilometers southwest of Mauritius, which is the nearest island. Like the other DOMs, it is also one of the 26 regions of France with the similar status as those situated on the European mainland.
