Sainte-Genevieve-des-Bois is a community in the southern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located 23.5 kilometers from the center of Paris. The city lately gained notoriety because the discovery of Ilan Halimi's body occurred there. The community lies just north of junction 42 on the orbital Francilienne autoroute. The French department of Essonne is part of the region of Ile-de-France. It is named after the Essonne River. It was formed on January 1, 1968 with the split of the Seine-et-Oise department.
 
The city’s land area is 9.27 square kilometers, population as per the 1999 census was 32,125 and the density in 1999 was 3,465 square kilometers. The city’s main attractions include the Donjon, a park with animals, a grotto and a traditional Russian Cemetery. Nearby, there is parkland which borders on the river Orge which is a tributary of the Seine and a campsite at Villiers-sur-Orge.
