Saint-Denis, Seine-Saint-Denis

France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometers, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.

Saint-Denis is a commune in the northern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located at about 9.4 kilometers far away from the centre of Paris. Saint-Denis is a sous-prefecture of the Seine-Saint-Denis department, being the seat of the Arrondissement of Saint-Denis. Saint-Denis is home to the royal necropolis of Saint Denis Basilica and was also the location of the associated abbey. It is also the home to France's national stadium, Stade de France, built for the 1998 Football World Cup. Saint-Denis is a formerly industrial suburb currently reconverting its economic base. Many of the residents are Muslim immigrants from former French colonies.

The land area of the city is 12.36 square kilometers. The population of the city recorded as of July 1, 2004 was 95,300 and as of March 8, 1999 census was 85,832. The density of population in the city in 2004 was 7,710 per square kilometer. Until the 3rd century, Saint-Denis was a small settlement called Catolacus or Catulliacum, probably meaning estate of Catullius, a Gallo-Roman landowner. In 1793, during the French Revolution, Saint-Denis was renamed Franciade in a gesture of rejection of religion. In 1803, however, under the Consulate of Napoleon Bonaparte, the city recovered its former name of Saint-Denis.

Seine-Saint-Denis is a French department located in the Ile-de-France region. Seine-Saint-Denis was largely part of the Seine department until 1964. It has a veritable history as a left-wing stronghold, belonging to the cincture rouge of Paris.

Presently, Saint-Denis experiences a sharp social, economic and population growth derivative of the strategic position of the locality and the high level of well-being and quality of life that is enjoyed with respect to other places of France. Saint-Denis, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited place.
