Reims

France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometers, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.

Reims is a city of northern France, 144 kilometers east-northeast of Paris. Its history can be traced back to the period of the Roman Empire. Reims played a very significant role in French history, as it was the place where the kings of France were crowned. In 1999, the population of the city was 187,206 and an area of 46.9 square kilometers. In World War I, the city was greatly damaged. The church was severely damaged and was restored. The church was rebuilt from the ruins in the course of the next 40 years. The collection of preserved buildings and Roman ruins remains monumentally inspiring.

Reims is often considered the capital of Champagne, an old province of France made world-famous by its Champagne sparkling wine, though in reality it is only the biggest city of Champagne, but not its capital, being only a sous-prefecture of the Marne departement. Reims is located in a plain on the right bank of the Vesle River, a tributary of the Aisne River and on the canal which connects the Aisne with the Marne River.

Reims, along with Epernay and Ay, is one of the centers of Champagne production. Many of the biggest Champagne producing houses, known as les grandes marques, have their headquarters in Reims and most are open for tasting and tours by appointment. Champagne is aged in the many caves and tunnels under Reims. Reims is an attractive city with natural beauty and historical places, while traveling in France.
