Palaiseau is a commune in the southern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located 16.9 kilometres from the center of Paris. Palaiseau is a sous-prefecture of the Essonne departement, being the seat of the Arrondissement of Palaiseau. The French departement of Essonne is part of the region of Ile-de-France. It is named after the Essonne River. It was formed on January 1, 1968 with the split of the Seine-et-Oise departement. Palaiseau land area is 11.51 square kilometres and its population and density according to 1999 census were 28,965 and 2,517 per square kilometres. Their colleges and universities Ecole Polytechnique and an annex of Ecole nationale superieure de Techniques Avancees are now located in Palaiseau, on the Plateau de Saclay.
 
For transportation Palaiseau is served by three stations on Paris RER, Reseau Express Regional line B Palaiseau, Palaiseau’s Villebon and Lozere is the last station which is the closest to the famous Ecole Polytechnique. Presently, Palaiseau experiences a sharp social, economic and population growth derivative of the strategic position of the locality and the high level of well-being and quality of life that is enjoyed with respect to other places of France.
