Niort




France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometres, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.

Niort is a commune of western France, prefecture of the Deux-Sevres departement. The Latin name of the city was Novio Rito. Niort is may be best known as the centre of angelica cultivation in France. Near Niort at Maisonnay there is one of the tallest radio masts in France. It is located on the Sevre Niortaise River. The land area is 68.20 square kilometers, and density is 831 square kilometers in 1999. Population of the city at the 1999 census was 56,663.
 
In Sports, Niort is home to Chamois Niortais, a football team in ligue 2, the second-highest league in French football. Niort is also home to rugby team Stade Niortais who are celebrating their 100 year anniversary this year coinciding with the release of a book about the history of the team. Finally, Niort is the home to the Dragons, the baseball team of the city which evolves in the Regional League.
