Montpellier




France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometers, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.

Montpellier is a city in the south of France. It is a capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region. Its total population in 1999 census was 225,392 inhabitants, whereas the whole metropolitan area had a population of 459,916 inhabitants in 1999. As of February 2004 estimates, the population of the city of Montpellier reached 244,700 inhabitants, meaning a 1.7 percent population growth per year between 1999 and 2004. The area is 56.88 square kilometer.
 
Montpellier city is situated on hilly ground of 10 kilometer inland from the Mediterranean coast on the River Lez. The name of the city, originally Monspessulanus, is said to have stood for Mont Pele. Montpellier is one of the few cities in France without a Roman background. The main focus point of the city is the Place de la Comedie, the Musee Fabre, the Porte du Peyrou, a triumphal arch, the Aqueduc Saint-Clement, a fine botanical garden, the first in France, founded in 1593.
 
Montpellier is a city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages. It is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
