Vienne

France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometres, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.

Vienne is a community of France, located 30 kilometers south of Lyon, on the Rhone River. It is the second city after Grenoble in the Isere departement, of which it is a sous-prefecture. Isere is a departement in the east of France named after the Isere River. In 2001, the population of the city was 29,400 and an area of 22.65 square kilometers. Vienne was a significant early bishopric in Christian Gaul. Its most famous bishop was Avitus of Vienne.

A suspension bridge leads from the city to the right bank of the Rhone, where the industrial quarter of Ste Colombe now occupies part of the ancient city. There is a tower, built in 1349 by Philip of Valois to defend the French bank of the Rhone, as distinguished from the left bank, which, as part of the kingdom of Provence, was dependent on the Holy Roman Empire. Also this state of things is recalled by the name of the village, St Romain en Gal, northwest of Ste Colombe.

The city is well known for its annual Jazz Festival, which takes place in the Roman Ancient Theatre. The early Romanesque basilica church of St Peter belonged to an ancient Benedictine abbey and was rebuilt in the 9th century with tall square piers and two ranges of windows in the tall aisles and a notable porch. The Gothic former church of St Maurice was built in many campaigns over a long period, between 1052 and 1533. Vienne is an attractive city with natural beauty and historical places, while traveling in France.
