Montelimar

France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometers, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.

Montelimar is a commune of southern France in the Drome department. It is the second largest town in the department after Valence. Land area of the commune is 46.81 square kilometers. Its population in 1999 was 31,344 and density in 1999 was 669 per square kilometers. The site where the city of Montelimar nowadays stands has been populated since the Celtic era. It was reconstructed during the Roman reign, including a basilica, aqueducts, thermae and a forum. The family Adhemar reigned over the city in the Middle Age and built a castle which dominates the city silhouette even today.

It was the birthplace of the French navigator Louis de Freycinet and the hometown of Emile Loubet, President of France from 1899 till 1906, who also worked as the mayor of Montelimar. Montelimar is widely regarded as the world capital of nougat. Travelers used to buy nougat de Montelimar on their way to the south of France as the city is next to the Rhone River and to the primary route N7. Since the construction of the A7 autoroute, many nougat factories have been obliged to close as the tourists no longer take a rest in Montelimar but go around it instead.

Drome is a department in southeastern France named after the Drome River. Drome was one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from the former province of Dauphine. Montelimar, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited place. It is also said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origins back to prehistoric times.
