France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Tarbes is a French town and commune, in the department of Hautes-Pyrenees, of which it is the prefecture. It is part of the historical region of Gascony and is the second largest metropolitan area of Midi-Pyrenees, with 110,000 inhabitants. Hautes-Pyrenees is a department in southwestern France. The total area is of 15.33 square kilometers and its population 46,275 with density 3,019 per square kilometers.
 
The 2006 Tour de France departed from Tarbes, for one of its stages. Tarbes Gespe Bigorre is the main sport team of the town as a female basketball team taking part to the French League and European competitions. Tarbes is twinned with Huesca, Spain and Altenkirchen, Germany.
