Maubeuge




France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Maubeuge is a town and commune of northern France, in the department of Nord, situated on both banks of the Sambre, 36 kilometers east of Valenciennes and about 9 kilometers from the Belgian border. In 1999 census, Maubeuge population was 34,051.
 
Maubeuge owes its origin to a double monastery, for men and women, founded in the seventh century by Saint Aldego, the relics are preserved in the church. It subsequently belonged to the territory of Hainault. It was burnt by Louis XI of France, by Francis I of France, and by Henry II of France, and was finally assigned to France by the Treaty of Nijmegen. Nord is a department in the north of France.
