France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometres, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.
 
Marseille is the second biggest city in France and the third metropolitan area, with 1,516,340 inhabitants according to the 1999 poll. Located in the former province of Provence and on the Mediterranean Sea, it is France's biggest commercial port. It is considered the Provencale capital, one of the Occitan capitals of Occitania and France.
Marseille is the capital of the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region, as well as the capital of the Bouches-du-Rhone departement.
 
Marseille was founded in 600 before Christ by Greeks from Phocaea as a trading port under the name Massalia. Marseille is France's biggest port and one of the most significant of the Mediterranean Sea. Marseille is a centre for trade and industries. It joins France with others countries. On the other hand, many great enterprises settle down in Marseille. The city has an excellent transportation infrastructure and in addition, it is one of the biggest trade centres in the world, many large trade fairs take place in Marseille every year.
