Sedan




France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometers, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. It is a member of the European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation.

Sedan is one of most popular destinations in France, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments. It is a sous-prefecture of the Ardennes department. Sedan possesses a total land area of 16.28 square kilometers, population of 20,548 inhabitants as of 1999 census and a population density of 1,262 inhabitants per square kilometer.
 
Sedan is of momentous importance as the historic center is built on a peninsula formed by an arc of the Meuse River. A center of cloth production, begun under the patronage of Cardinal Mazarin, supported the town until the late 19th century. In the 16th century Sedan was an asylum for Protestant refugees from the Wars of Religion. Until 1651, the principality of Sedan belonged to the La Tour d'Auvergne family. During the Franco-Prussian War, on September 2, 1870 the French emperor Napoleon III was taken prisoner with 100,000 of his soldiers at the Battle of Sedan.
 
Presently, Sedan is recognized for its castle that is claimed to be the biggest equipped medieval castle in Europe with a total surface of 30.000 square meters on seven levels. It is the only remaining part of the once enormous fortifications in and around the town. It also serves both as a tourist and a dormitory centre for Sedan.
 
Sedan is a city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages. It is also one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
