Lormont is a community in the department of Gironde and the Aquitaine region of France. It is a suburb of the city of Bordeaux, and is neighboring to it on the northeast. As a result, it is a member of the metropolitan Urban Community of Bordeaux. In the 1999 census, the city had a population of 21,343. Gironde is a department in the southwest of France named after the Gironde Estuary. It was one of the original 83 departments produced during the French Revolution on March 4th, 1790. It was created from parts of the former provinces of Gascogne and Guyenne. From 1793 to 1795, the name was changed to Bec-d'Ambes to circumvent the association with the revolutionary party named as the Girondins.
