Les Abymes is the largest community in the French overseas department of Guadeloupe. It is situated on the west side of the island of Grande-Terre, and is part of the metropolitan area of Pointe-a-Pitre, the largest city in Guadeloupe. In the 1999 census, the city had a population of 63,054.

Geographically, this city shares the area of the Large-Bottoms with the communes of Gosier, Sainte-Anne, Dull-with-the Eau and the Mould. Encircled of marshes and mangroves in the west, it is marked out by series of mounts as well.

In the year 1996 the new airport Caribbean Pole opened its doors and in 1997 the Bridge of Alliance was launched, the old airport remaining intended for the regional flights towards Martinique and Saint Martin's day. Previously rural, the city of Abymes nowadays is developed significantly on the industrial and commercial level.
