Lens




France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometres, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.
 
Lens is a community in northern France, in the Pas-de-Calais department. It is one of France's large Picarde cities along with Valenciennes, Lille, Roubaix, Amiens, Tourcoing, Arras and Douai. The city’s occupied land area is 11.57 square kilometers, population in 1999 was 36,823 and density in 1999 was 3,182 square kilometers. In the urban area this city belongs to the Communaupole which gathers 36 communes, with a total population of 250,000 inhabitants. Lens, together with Douai, forms the metropolitan area of Douai-Lens, whose population at the 1999 census was 552,682.
 
The city is a mining and industrial centre and has a long history of coal mining. Neighboring the town are many large slag heaps. The city supports a top-level football team named as the Racing Club de Lens.Very close from there, the Vimy Memorial, is at Vimy Ridge. Its principal towns include Calais and Boulogne-sur-Mer, Artois, Lens, Lievin, Arras, and Saint-Omer.
