Lanester is a commune in the department of Morbihan and the Bretagne region of France. It is located in the metropolitan Communaute d'agglomeration du Pays de Lorient and is the largest suburb of the city of Lorient, across the Scorff River on its east side. In the 1999 census, Lanester had a population of 21,897.
 
Morbihan is a department in the northwest of France named after the Morbihan small sea in Breton, the enclosed sea that is the principal feature of the coastline. Morbihan was one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from part of the former province of Brittany.
