France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometers, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.

La Madeleine is a commune in the department of Nord and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France. It is located in the metropolitan Urban Community of Lille Metropole, and is a suburb of the city of Lille, bordering it on its north side. According to the 1999 census, La Madeleine had a population of 22,399.

Nord is a department in the north of France. In population terms, it is France's largest. Nord comprises the French parts of the County of Flanders, excluding the western parts separated in 1237 as the County of Artois and now part of the neighboring Pas-de-Calais, and Hainault. This territory was part of the Spanish Netherlands, but was ceded to France in successive treaties. It was one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790.
