La Ciotat

La Ciotat is a commune in the Bouches du Rhone department and the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region in southern France. It has a land area of 31.46 square kilometers with a population of 31,630 people. It is a component of the metropolitan Marseille Provence Metropole and the second-largest suburb of the city of Marseille and is located to the southeast of it. It is twinned with Bridgewater in the county of Somerset, England. La Ciotat is the site of the first showing of an animated film. It was by the Lumiere brothers.
 
Bouches du Rhone is a department in the south of France named after the mouth of the Rhone River. Bouches du Rhone was one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from part of the former province of Provence and the principalities of Orange, Martigues and Lambesc. It lost part of its territory in 1793, including Orange and Apt, when the Vaucluse department was created.
 
La Ciotat is also said to be as one of the best geographical environment and can trace its origins back to prehistoric times. This is evident from the archaeological sites found throughout the La Ciotat town.
