Istres is a town and commune in the department of Bouches-du-Rhone and the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region of France. It is the largest component commune of the metropolitan Syndicat d'agglomeration nouvelle Ouest-Provence and is located on the northwest side of the Etang de Berre lagoon, northwest of the city of Marseille. In the 1999 census, Istres had a population of 38,993. It is the site of the Istres Air Base and Football Club Istres a football team in Ligue 2, the second-highest league in French football.
 
Bouches-du-Rhone is a department in the south of France named after the mouth of the Rhone River. Bouches-du-Rhone was one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from part of the former province of Provence and the principalities of Orange, Martigues and Lambesc.
