Gradignan is a town in the department of Gironde and the Aquitaine region of France. It is a suburb of the city, Bordeaux, and is located to its southwest side. It is a member of the metropolitan Urban Community of Bordeaux. According to the 1999 census, it had a population of 22,193 inhabitants. Gironde is a department in the southwest of France named after the Gironde Estuary. It was one of the 83 departments formed during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790.
 
Gradignan was created from parts of the previous provinces of Guyenne and Gascogne. From 1793 to 1795, its name was changed to Bec-d'Ambes to avoid the association with the revolutionary party, the Girondins. Gironde is part of the region of Aquitaine and is surrounded by the departments of Landes, Lot-et-Garonne, Dordogne, Charente and Charente-Maritime. With 10,000 squared kilometers, it has the largest department of metropolitan France.
