France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometres, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.

Fort-de-France is the capital of France's Caribbean department d'outre-mer of Martinique. With a population of 134,727 inhabitants as per 1999 census in the urban area, 94,049 of whom live in the city of Fort-de-France proper, it is also one of the major cities in the Caribbean. It is one of the French naval bases of the Caraib, with Degrad des Cannes. It is beneath command of the capitaine de vaisseau in charge of the Navy and the naval air force for the Caraibs. The forces based here include the Batral Champlain, the patrol vessel Fougueuse and the frigate Ventose.

The fort is also home for on the last iguana populations of Martinique. The city has a fine, natural harbor defended by three forts. These include Fort Desaix built from 1763 to 1780, Fort la Convention in 1793, Fort George during the British occupations and Fort Desaix since 1802. This name was given by Napoleon Bonaparte after General Desaix form 1768 to 1800. A statue commemorating Martinique-born Empress Josephine, the wife of Napoleon, is also in the city. The land area is 44.21 square kilometers, population as per the 1999 census was 94,049 and the density in 1999 is 2,127 square kilometers.
