Fontenay-sous-Bois is a town in the eastern suburban area of Paris in France. It is located 9.3 kilometers from the center of Paris and has an area of 5.58 squared kilometers with a population of 50,800 inhabitants as per the July 1, 2004 census. Its population density is 9,104 persons per squared kilometer. Its name was recorded in the middle ages as Fontanetum, which meant the springs, from Medieval Latin Fontana natural spring. The town was known as Fontenay-les-Bois, which meant Fontenay by the woods, Fontenay-sur-le-Bois, which meant Fontenay over the wood, or Fontenay-sous-Bois, which meant Fontenay under wood. Finally in the early 19th century, name of Fontenay-sous-Bois became the only name.
 
In 1929, the commune of Fontenay-sous-Bois lost more than a third of its area when the city of Paris annexed the Bois de Vincennes. It is served by Fontenay-sous-Bois station on Paris railway line and is also served by Val de Fontenay station. The station is an interchange station on Paris railway line A and railway line E. Val-de-Marne is a French department, which is named after the Marne River. It is located in the Ile-de-France region, in Paris west. Val-de-Marne has a ppopulation density of 5,137 persons per square kilometer on an area of 245 squared kilometers. It lies to the south-east of Paris and is, together with Seine-Saint-Denis and Hauts-de-Seine. It is one of three small departments in Ile-de-France that form a ring around Paris, known as the petite couronne.
 
Fontenay-sous-Bois is known as the town of best geographical environment and has traced its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and can also enjoy its natural beauty concealed by the beautiful landscapes.
