Evry is one of most popular destinations in France, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments. It is a commune in the southern suburbs of Paris. It is located almost 25 kilometers away from the center of Paris, in the new town of Evry Ville Nouvelle, created in the 1960s, of which it is the central and most populated commune. Evry is situated by significant suburbs including Corbeil-Essonnes, Ris-Orangis, Bretigny-sur-Orge, and Draveil.

It has a total land area of 8.33 square kilometers, population of 51,900 inhabitants according to the 2004 estimate and density of 6,230 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Originally the commune was called Evry-sur-Seine that means Evry upon Seine. The name Evry comes from the Celtic name Eburiacos, meaning land of Eburos, perhaps the leader of a Gallic tribe in the area before the conquest of Gaul by the Romans. After the conquest, the name was ruined into Latin Apriacum. On June 29, 1965 the name of the commune was shortened into Evry.

In spite of the intense urbanization that is undergoing in Evry, the commune accounts numerous attractive natural memorials which include the Cathedral of the Resurrection, dedicated to St Corbinien and built by a predominantly Moslem work force.

Presently, Evry is the capital of the Essonne department. It is also the official seat of the arrondissement of Evry, although in reality the sous-prefecture buildings and administration are located in the neighboring commune of Corbeil-Essonnes. As of today, it experiences a sharp social, economic and population growth derivative of the strategic position of the locality and the high level of well-being and quality of life that is enjoyed with respect to other places of France.
