Dole




France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometres, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.

Dole is a commune in the Jura departement, which is a departement in the east of France named after the Jura Mountains in France, of which it is a sous-prefecture, or Subprefecture is an administrative town housing the headquarters of an arrondissement not containing the prefecture for its departement. As of 1999 the population of Dole was 24,949. Dole was the capital of Franche-Comte until Louis XIV conquered the region, he shifted the parliament from Dole to Besancon. The university, founded by Philip the Good of Burgundy in 1422, was also transferred to Besancon at that time. Dole is located on the Doubs River. Dole was the birthplace of Louis Pasteur, microbiologist and chemist. The 1995 film, Happiness is in the field, was set in Dole.
