Cherbourg-Octeville is a town and community in Normandy, north-west France. It was formed when the city of Cherbourg captivated Octeville on February 28, 2000, and was formally renamed Cherbourg-Octeville. It holds an arsenal of the French Navy. It is situated at the north of the Cotentin Peninsula. It is in the Manche department in the Basse-Normandie region. The city has an area of 6.9 square kilometers.

The combined population of Cherbourg and Octeville at the 1999 census was 42,318 inhabitants. Population of Cherbourg metropolitan area at the 1999 census was 117,855 inhabitants. The Battle of Cherbourg, fought in June 1944 next to the Normandy Invasion, ended with the capture of Cherbourg on June 30.

This community is a seaport on the English Channel, with the majority of its cross channel ferry services being operated by Brittany Ferries to Poole and Portsmouth. Services to Rosslare, Republic of Ireland, are operated by Irish Ferries and Celtic Link. The city's station is at the end of a railway line built by the Chemins de Fer de l'Ouest from Paris. Its land area is 6.91 square kilometers, population as per the 1999 census was 44,108 and density in 1999 was 3,667 square kilometers.
