Chaumont




France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. At 674,843 square kilometers, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. Chaumont is a community of France, and the prefecture that is the capital of the Haute-Marne department. The population as per the 2002 census was around 30,000. The city stands on the Marne River and is located on the railway linking Basel and Paris, which runs over a 50 meter tall viaduct there. In history the seat of the counts of Bassigny and later of Champagne, this community was the site of an unpleasant treaty in opposition to Napoleon I signed by the United Kingdom, Prussia, Austria and Russia in the year 1814. The city was also bombed in 1940 and 1944 during the World War II. Their land area is 55.26 square kilometers, population as per the 1999 census was 25,996 and density as of 1999 was 470 per kilometer.
