Chatellerault is a commune in the Vienne department, in the Poitou-Charentes region of France. It is located north of Poitou in Touraine. The population of the city as of 1999 is 34,192. The town of Chatellerault was an important stronghold on the northern marsh of Poitou, established by the Count of Poitiers to secure his borders in the early 10th century. The department of Vienne was formed in 1790 from parts of the former provinces of Poitou, Touraine, and Berry. From 1816 to 1968, Chatellerault was a center of sword and arms manufacture for the French government.
