Chartres




France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometres, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. Chartres was one of the principal towns of the Carnutes and by the Romans was called Autricum, from the river Autura. It was burnt by the Normans in 858, and unsuccessfully besieged by them in 911. Chartres is a town and commune of France, prefecture of the Eure-et-Loir department. It is located at about 96 kilometers far away from the southwest part of Paris in central France. Eure-et-Loir is a French department, named after the Eure and Loir rivers. The population of the city is of 40,361 people.
 
Chartres is one of the most important market towns in the region of Beauce known as the granary of France.
