France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometres, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.
 
Chalon-sur-Saone is a city, former district and community in central France, in the Saone-et-Loire department, of which it is a sous-prefecture. Chalon-sur-Saone is part of the Burgundy region. It is located on the Saone River and was once a famous river port, as a point to distribute local wines up and down the Saone River. In 1999, the population of the city was 50,124 and an area of 15.22 square kilometers.
 
Chalon is best known as the birthplace of photography. Its most famous resident, Nicephore Niepce also has a high school named after him. There is a museum which contains some early photography ruins is on the Quai des Messageries in the town, containing over two million photographs and many old art facts such as cameras and other equipment for old and modern photography.
 
The Saint-Vincent church on the Place Saint-Vincent a city square has certain architectural elements dating from the 8th century, and a neoclassical 19th century facade. This city square also has a number of cafes and is host to a busy market on Fridays and Sundays. Saone-et-Loire is a French departement, named after the Saone and the Loire rivers between which it lies. It is a city with endless recreational opportunities, rich history, and modern day luxuries.
