Chalons-en-Champagne is a town and community in France. Previously called Chalons-sur-Marne, the municipality was officially renamed Chalons-en-Champagne in 1998. Chalons-en-Champagne is the capital region of the Marne departement, and the capital of the Champagne-Ardenne region. In 1999, the population of the city was 47339 and an area of 26.05 square kilometers.
 
Marne is a departement in northeastern France named after the Marne River which flows through the departement. The sous-prefectures are Epernay, Reims, Sainte-Menehould, and Vitry-le-Francois. Inside the Marne departement are located the Champagne vineyards producing the world-famous sparkling wine. Marne was one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from the province of Champagne.
