Cayenne

France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometres, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.

Cayenne is the capital of the French overseas region of French Guiana. The city stands on an island at the entrance of the Cayenne River on the Atlantic shore. At the 1999 poll, there were 66,149 inhabitants in the urban area of Cayenne, 50,594 of whom lived in the city community of Cayenne proper, and the remainder in the neighbouring community of Remire-Montjoly.

Cayenne is a significant industrial centre for the shrimp industry. Formerly, it also contained sugar refineries. Cayenne is very culturally diverse, with Creoles, Haitians, Brazilians, Europeans, Hmong and Asians all living in the city. It is well-known for its particular annual carnival which starts with the arrival of Carnival King on the first Sunday after New Year's Day and continues with very popular all-night costume balls and Sunday afternoon parades every weekend until Mardi Gras.

Cayenne centers on its main commercial street, the Avenue General de Gaulle. At the east end of the avenue near the shore is the Place de Palmistes and the Place de Grenoble. Most of the official buildings are located in this area. To the west of this area lies Fort Ceperou, built in the 17th century, though now mostly in ruins. To the south lie the Place du Coq and Place Victor Schoelcher and a market. Cayenne is an attractive city with natural beauty and historical places, while traveling in France.
