Brive-la-Gaillarde

France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometers, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.

Brive-la-Gaillarde is a commune of France. The total land in the city is of 48.59 square kilometers. The total population of the city as of 1999 is 49,141 and the density of population in the city is 1,011 per square kilometer. Even though the inhabitants settled around the 1st century, the city only started to grow much later. Starting around the 5th century, the original city starts to develop around a church dedicated to Saint-Martin-l'Espagnol.

The commune was named Brive until 1919, when it was renamed Brive-la-Gaillarde. The word Gaillarde probably stands for bravery or strength, but it can also refer to the city's walls. Brive now extends outside of its original boundaries into Malemort and Ussac. The medieval center is mainly a commercial district with retail shops and various cafes. It is also the location of the city hall, the main police station, and the Labenche museum. One notable landmark outside the inner city is the Pont Cardinal, a bridge which used to be a crossing point for travelers from Paris to Toulouse.

Presently, Brive-la-Gaillarde experiences a sharp social, economic and population growth derivative of the strategic position of the locality and the high level of well-being and quality of life that is enjoyed with respect to other places of France. Brive-la-Gaillarde, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited place.
