Bourges




France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometers, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. Bourges is a town and commune in central France. It is the capital of the departement of Cher, and was also the capital of the former province of Berry. Bourges is located on the Yevre river. In 1999 census,  Bourges had a population of 72,480.
 
In the middle ages, Bourges was the capital of a Viscounty until the fourteenth century. Future king Charles VII sought refuge there, and his son Louis XI was born there in 1423. In 1438, Charles decreed the Pragmatic Sanction of Bourges. During this period, Bourges was also a major capital of alchemy. Bourges is also the seat of an archbishopric.
