Blois




France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. Blois is a town and commune in France, the capital of the Loir-et-Cher departement, situated on the banks of the lower river Loire between Orleans and Tours. Blois land area is 37.46 square kilometers, density is 1,313 square kilometers in 1999. Population of the city at the 1999 census was 49,171.
 
The famous Chateau de Blois, a Renaissance chateau once occupied by King Louis XII, is located in the centre of the city, and an eighteenth century stone bridge spans the Loire. As Blois is centered on a pair of steep hills, winding and steep pathways run through the city, culminating in long staircases at various points. To the west of town, the Foret de Russy is a remainder of the heavy woods that once covered the area.
