Aix-les-Bains is a spa town of eastern France, near the Lac du Bourget, and 9 meters by rail North of Chambery. Aix-les-Bains is located in the Savoie department, in the Rhone-Alpes region. It is a commune and a chef lieu de canton of the department. In 1999 census, Aix-les-Bains population was 25,732. Aix derives from Latin Aquae, and Aix was a bath during the Roman Empire, even before it was renamed Aquae Gratianae to commemorate the Emperor Gratian, who was assassinated not far away, at Lyon, in 383. Numerous Roman remains survive.
