Aix-les-Bains
France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. Aix-les-Bains is a spa town of eastern France, near the Lac du Bourget, and 9 meters by rail North of Chambery. Aix-les-Bains is located in the Savoie department, in the Rhone-Alpes region. It is a commune and a chef lieu de canton of the department. In 1999 census, Aix-les-Bains population was 25,732. Aix derives from Latin Aquae, and Aix was a bath during the Roman Empire, even before it was renamed Aquae Gratianae to commemorate the Emperor Gratian, who was assassinated not far away, at Lyon, in 383. Numerous Roman remains survive.
