Nord France eXperts: Northern France Nominated #1 Region in France for Attracting Foreign Companies
Regional development authorities in Northern France (Nord-Pas de Calais) today announced that the region had attracted more foreign investment than any other region in France in 2001. (Figures exclude Paris and the Greater Paris area). Altogether 41 new companies created 2,500 jobs during the year.
Northern France has long been a popular host region for foreign direct investment in France, leading the field from 1993 to 2000. Located at the crossroad of Europe's main markets, it offers direct access to 100 million consumers within a 200-mile radius, its international reach facilitated by first-class infrastructure.
North American businesses feature prominently among companies that have made Northern France their location of choice in Europe. Last year, Columbia Sportswear set up its European distribution headquarters in Northern France, while Daimler-Chrysler invested in a new distribution center in the region and Johnson & Johnson entered into a joint venture with a local healthcare company. Oxford Automotive expanded its production site, creating another 188 jobs. American auto companies in the region include Case Corp., Caterpillar, Firestone-Bridgestone, Delphi Automotive and Visteon. In the biotech industry Biorad, Tyco and Medtronics have created more than 300 jobs this year, while IT specialists Ingram Micro, Oracle and the Completel Group have also chosen Northern France as their European base.
